Picatic

2015

Picatic is a event management app that allows users to setup events, manage events and sell tickets. When I started at Picatic it was a small team of 6 people and the company was recently bought out by Eventbrite.

I started at Picatic as an intern during my undergrad degree as a developer and I was tasked with building a Check-In app for iOS and Android. The app would allow users scan tickets to there event and check-in or out users and manage event metrics. I had the opportunity to start this project from scratch, develop and design the app and then launch it to the app stores for both platforms for users to use.

The Process

My role on the team was a developer so I took a development first approach. The requirements were well laid out by the team beforehand and this helped me to define the features and screens that would be needed. I then started to develop the app with a basic design following a dev first approach to ensure the the required features are functional.
After this was done I worked with the product designer on the team to come up with a design for the app. Once this step was done I worked with the front-end developer to make the app visually appealing.
After the design and development process I managed the user testing phase to ensure the app is working as expected and to then launch the app to the Apple and Android app stores.

Takeaways

This was an amazing experience especially as I was finishing up my undergrad degree when I started working for Picatic and to have the opportunity to see a project from idea to launching it taught me many valuable lessons. One of the main lessons I learned was following a design-first approach would have worked better to then prevent design changes after development was complete. This lead to changes that took more time than if we had followed a design-first approach.
